The first guests: pros and cons
A newborn baby is a great joy that you want to share with your loved ones by inviting them over. From a medical perspective, there are no restrictions on when you can show your baby to others. However, many specialists believe that the first guests should be invited only after a month from the birth.
Guest Reception Guidelines:
Health is Paramount: The main rule is that all guests must be healthy. The baby's immune system is still developing, so any infection can be a threat. Even if you or your guests think that a slight runny nose is not a big deal, it’s better to postpone the visit until full recovery. Special caution should be exercised during the flu season.
Hand Hygiene: Before meeting the baby, ask guests to thoroughly wash their hands with soap, even if they don't plan to hold the newborn.
Planned Visits: It’s very important that any visit to a home with a newborn be coordinated with you, the parents. Spontaneous meetings with friends are nice, but a large group can be stressful for the baby.
Quiet Voices: Ask guests to speak softly to avoid scaring the baby. One of the interesting activities for a baby at this age is listening and identifying the source of sounds, so it’s better if everyone speaks one at a time.
Diet Considerations: Don’t forget to inform guests that you are on a diet due to breastfeeding, and they should not bring foods that are restricted for you.
Baby’s Routine: Ensure the baby is well-rested and fed by the time guests arrive.
Nursery Privacy: It’s better to keep the nursery closed to guests and periodically bring the baby out to them.
Decorations: We recommend not decorating the house with balloons, as they might burst and scare the baby. Use garlands instead!
Flower Bouquets: Keep bouquets in rooms where the baby doesn’t sleep, as strong smells can irritate the baby.
Capture the Moment: Don’t forget to take pictures and document your celebration. You can start a special album!
Post-Visit Care: Our children are very sensitive to their surroundings. After noisy guest visits, the baby may be restless, wake up frequently at night, and require your presence. Don’t be alarmed by this: the baby is processing an abundance of impressions. Be patient, and everything will soon settle down.
